When I opened my institute with other colleagues in 1979, I came from a solid academic background and I loved Gestalt therapy. I had just turned 23 and, after graduating and working for two years as a university lecturer in Rome, I had moved back to Sicily, where there was certainly no tradition of the approach. The spirit of curiosity and creativity that underpins Gestalt therapy has always appealed to me, as much as the spirit of research. Moreover, as all of my family were mathematicians, statistics has always been in my blood.</p> <p>Today I can say that research falls perfectly within the scope of the challenge that the founders set themselves–the challenge of creating a method that could describe and sustain the spontaneity of life, without depriving relationships of their vitality through diagnostic categories or interpretive practices (Perls et al., 1994). The most interesting research that Gestalt practitioners can pursue is that which confirms the validity of the core principal of our work, which is that therapy lies in supporting a spontaneity that the therapist grasps in the movement co-created with the client. I have sought to uphold this spirit in the training and research activities of my Institute.</p> <p>I will begin with the Gestalt therapist’s encounter with training and research; that is, with a discussion of the particular experience of Gestalt training, which is phenomenological, aesthetic, and field-oriented. Then I will give a brief description of the underlying concepts of the approach and provide examples of related research. Psychopathology, the development of relational suffering, the therapeutic alliance, and other aspects will be examined from the point of view of research. What will emerge is how the aims of research cannot be severed from the actual purpose of psychotherapy, even though our approach was established for very different ends. I will then introduce the concept of aesthetic relational knowledge of the field and the concept of dnce steps as a proposed description of the attunement between the therapist and client, in line with new cultural forms of expression. Finally, I will present the cutting-edge research my Institute has done on dance steps and its clinical application.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language-2 field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/86" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-bibcite field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-bibcite-reference clearfix field__item"><article class="bibcite-reference"> <div class="bibcite-citation"> <div class="csl-bib-body"><div><div class="csl-entry"><span class="citeproc-author">Spagnuolo Lobb, M</span>. The research path of the tool is also sketched. This contribution is presented in the frame of reference of psychotherapists' political and social response-ability today. For the author, a main clinical problem today derives from the lack of recognition from the other, which makes bodily desensitisation evident in our clients. This brings Gestalt therapists to focus on the reciprocity of their interactions with clients, instead of on how the client makes contact, because there, in the actual dance between them, is the possibility of revitalising the contact boundary, where the self is co-created.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language-2 field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/86" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-bibcite field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-bibcite-reference clearfix field__item"><article class="bibcite-reference"> <div class="bibcite-citation"> <div class="csl-bib-body"><div><div class="csl-entry"><span class="citeproc-author">Spagnuolo Lobb, M</span>. However, systematic empirical works on this topic have been sparse compared to the enormous amount of theoretical literature. Therefore, in the following pilot study, the emotional profile of psychotherapists was investigated using the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS), a quantitative measure of the basic emotional foundations of human personality based on Jaak Panksepp’s neuro-ethological studies. More specifically, we submitted the ANPS to a population of Gestalt-therapists to ascertain if they share a characteristic emotional profile (1) and if the emotional traits of personality are related to specific intersubjective competences (2). Our results show that, compared with normal population, the personality of therapists is characterized by higher expression of PLAYFULNESS/joy, CARE/nurturance and Spirituality, as well as a significant decrease in the expression of the RAGE/anger disposition. Such emotional traits, that are not influenced by the experience of training, correlate with important relational skills such as empathy, reflective functioning and interoceptive awareness. Therefore, unlearned emotional dispositions have high relevance in the development of the therapist’s sensitivity to the phenomenological intersubjective field, a competence recently called “Aesthetic Relational Knowledge” in a contemporary Gestalt-approach. Our findings may have implications for training therapists and optimizing treatment outcomes.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language-2 field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/86" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-bibcite field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-bibcite-reference clearfix field__item"><article class="bibcite-reference"> <div class="bibcite-citation"> <div class="csl-bib-body"><div><div class="csl-entry"><span class="citeproc-author">Alcaro, A., Iacono Isidoro, S., Conversi, D., Accoto, A., &amp; Spagnuolo Lobb, M</span>. Basing on previous researches of neuro-aesthetics, and on the concept of Aesthetic Relational Knowledge inside the frame of Gestalt therapy, the research has inquired on the reactions of 29 individuals in front of images of pain and neutral feelings, in artistic representations and in photos of actors. The individuals were tested with SCL-90-R, MAIA and IRI. The results confirm the hypothesis that the wish to help relates to bodily-emotional activation, with the capacity to feel one’s own body and yet hold the emotion of the other. Bodily-emotional activation was shown only in artistic representation of pain. A possible explanation is that the “movement” that activates a person in front of the pain is better expressed in artistic images. At the same time, the wish to help relates to the capacity to de-centralize from oneself and focus on the other. Lack of empathy is not connected with avoidance to help the other. Randomised controlled trials are often the first methodological choice to gain evidence, yet they are not applicable to a wide range of humanistic psychotherapies. Amongst all, the efficacy of the Gestalt therapy (GT) is under-investigated. The purpose of this paper is to present a research protocol, aiming to assess the effects of a GT-based intervention on people with dementia (PWD) and indirect influence on their family carers. The study implements the single-case experimental design with time series analysis that will be carried out in Italy and Mexico. Six people in each country, who received a diagnosis of dementia and present depressive symptoms, will be recruited. Eight or more GT sessions will be provided, whose fidelity will be assessed by the GT fidelity scale. Quantitative outcome measures are foreseen for monitoring participants’ depression, anxiety, quality of life, loneliness, carers’ burden, and the caregiving dyad mutuality at baseline and follow-up. The advantages and limitations of the research design are considered. If GT will effectively result in the treatment of depression in PWD, it could enrich the range of evidence-based interventions provided by healthcare services.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language-2 field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/86" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-bibcite field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-bibcite-reference clearfix field__item"><article class="bibcite-reference"> <div class="bibcite-citation"> <div class="csl-bib-body"><div><div class="csl-entry"><span class="citeproc-author">Merizzi, A., Biasi, R., Álvarez Zamudio, J. The study compares how the therapist’s felt sense of the phenomenological intersubjective field and aesthetic relational competence differs between a group of experienced students and psychotherapists and a group of beginners. The sample consisted of 128 participants (20 M; 108 F), finally divided into two groups: “experienced students and psychotherapists” and “beginners”. The Aesthetic Relational Knowledge Scale (ARKS), a questionnaire consisting of 58 items targeting three factors (empathy, body awareness, and resonance), was administered. Statistical analyses were conducted to assess (i) differences between the two groups (through Student’s t and Cohen’s d for effect sizes), (ii) the influence of the level of training for each ARK factor using analyses of covariance for testing the possible influence of demographic variables, and (iii) logistic regressions to compare the influence of the three factors of the ARK model on the group variable with groups as a categorical variable. Significant differences between the two groups were found in body awareness and resonance. Body awareness was found to be the variable best discriminating between the beginners and the experienced students and psychotherapists. Despite being non-significant, there is a tendency suggesting that empathy appears more relevant at the beginning of training. The study shows the importance of training for the development of the therapist’s intuition and responsiveness, especially in the factors of body awareness and resonance. The results indicate the importance of assessing and supporting the aesthetic and field resonance of therapists in training, increasing quality and depth of the therapist’s responsiveness. This study is limited by a correlational design using self-report and on a limited sample, but it shows that the ARKS can monitor the effectiveness of training related to Gestalt therapeutic competencies.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language-2 field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/86" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-bibcite field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--entity-reference-target-type-bibcite-reference clearfix field__item"><article class="bibcite-reference"> <div class="bibcite-citation"> <div class="csl-bib-body"><div><div class="csl-entry"><span class="citeproc-author">Spagnuolo Lobb, M., Sciacca, F., Iacono Isidoro, S., &amp; Di Nuovo, S</span>. Based on a previous empirical study on the process of reciprocity in caregiver-infant/child interactions (Spagnuolo Lobb, 2016), the authors have worked on the construction of an observational tool to look at the co-creation of meaningful experiences, switching the focus from the child to the “dance” of reciprocity between caregiver and infant/child. Considering the contextualization in the field of Pediatric Psychology, this pilot study aimed to test the tool’s application with caregiver-preterm infant dyads, but exclusively referring to moderately preterm birth condition and with lack of disability or in any case serious evolutionary compromises. </p> <p>The study measured: 1. the content/construct validity of the tool, 2. its internal reliability, 3. its “sensitivity” to grasp the changing of the relational “dance” in the transition from one developmental step of the infant to another, regarding the times considered (between 6-9-12 months of corrected age), 4. co-occurrences between the behavioral flows of the infant-caregiver dyad in the three developmental stages considered. 32 expert psychotherapists were involved in measuring the instrument’s validity, and 13 caregiver-infant dyads were observed in their interactions at 6-9-12 months of corrected age of the infant. This pilot study promises to define – both for preventative and psychotherapeutic interventions – specific parental competencies for the infant’s neurodevelopment in the first year of life.</p> <p>This paper is part of the “Pediatric Psychology and Related Issues” Section (Sezione “Psicologia Pediatrica e Dintorni”) by S.I.P.Ped.
